As a Golf owner, I approve of this. All that's missing from that photo is the big puddle of oil.

But you can use anything to fix it.

Depends on the generation I guess. My EU market mk2, like the one in parts in the picture, is a cockroach. Perfectly reliable, very little repairs required besides regular maintenance. It started to leak oil a tiny bit though, but having 290k on the odometer and being over two decades old I can excuse its very mild incontinence.

Mine's a US Mk4 with 185k. It's always had leaking issues, which were never caught by my regular mechanic. Took it to a VW guy, he replaced the rear engine seal (I think). That stopped the worst of it, but my oil still disappears with no visible marks in the driveway. That's got me concerned, but I'm replacing it next year, most likely.

My dad once disassembled a golf 2 like that for a complete rebuild. That rebuild was what got me into cars. Seeing how many things make a car function and even how much engineering went into at cheap car like a golf.

The MK Is and mk IIs were built in Germany. For the mk iii and mk iv they moved manufacturing to Mexico. Not sure what the reliability is new that they're back in Germany, but part prices being what they are, they'd have to be bulletproof to justify economically.

I live in Europe, so they've always come from Germany in my market. I'm not really familiar with parts cost of the newer generations, but parts for my mk2 couldn't be cheaper. It's probably one of the reasons the mk2 is one of the most prevalent 80s cars still on the road today.

Take out the sunroof and I've owned that exact car (since it's a Euro-spec, it's safe to assume that's a manual transmission). Brings back memories...
